The single most common complaint about the Queens puzzle on LinkedIn is that there is only one per day. You finish your board in ninety seconds with your coffee, and that is it. Come back tomorrow. If you fell down the same rabbit hole I did, one a day stopped being enough months ago.

So I built the version I wanted to play: Queens by Pixel Wizard Press, free in the browser, no account, no app install. A fresh daily puzzle every midnight, plus an unlimited mode with boards from 7x7 up to 11x11 when one a day does not cut it.

What is the Queens puzzle?

Queens is a placement logic puzzle played on a square grid divided into colored regions. You place one crown in every row, every column, and every color region, with one extra rule that makes the whole thing sing: crowns can never touch each other, not even diagonally. The puzzle family goes by a few names, Star Battle among puzzle constructors, Two Not Touch in the New York Times, and Queens on LinkedIn. Same bones, same logic.

Every board on my site has exactly one solution, and pure logic gets you there every time. That last part matters more than it sounds. Plenty of puzzle generators spit out grids that technically have a single answer but force you into trial and error to find it. My generator rejects any board that cannot be finished with human deductions alone. If you are stuck, there is always a next logical step on the table.

The hint system is the part I care about most. Tap the hint button and it does not just hand you a square. It points at the board and explains the actual deduction, something like: this region fits entirely inside one column, so no other region can use that column. You get better at the puzzle instead of borrowing answers.

What are the basic solving techniques?

Three moves carry you through most boards:

1. Start with the smallest regions. A region with one or two squares has almost no freedom, and small regions are where every board cracks open. 2. Region confinement. If all of a region's remaining squares sit in a single row or column, that line belongs to it. Cross out everything else in the line. 3. The stranding test. Before placing a crown, check whether it would leave some other region with nowhere to go. If it would, cross that square out and move on.

Is there a daily Queens puzzle with streaks?

Yes. The daily board rolls over at your local midnight, streaks count consecutive days, and your times are saved on your device. Finish a board and you can share your time the same way you would share a Wordle score. Miss a day and the streak resets, which is exactly the kind of gentle pressure that keeps a puzzle habit honest.

Is the Queens game free? Yes. No account, no paywall, no app store. It runs in any browser and installs to your phone home screen if you want it there.

Does it work offline? Yes. After your first visit the puzzles cache locally, so it keeps working on a plane or a subway.

How hard do the puzzles get? Five tiers, from beginner boards a kid can finish to 11x11 expert grids that make you earn every crown. The difficulty label on each puzzle comes from counting the actual logical steps a solver needs, not from guessing by grid size.

Can I play Star Battle with two stars per row? Not in the browser yet. The two star variant is coming to the print side first.
